Inner West Residents Lead the Way With Christmas Leftover Recycling

Published On February 23, 2013

According to figures from Planet Ark, Sydney’s inner-west residents are ahead of the game when it comes to finding ways to recycle Christmas lunch leftovers and unwanted presents during the holiday season.

Out of the $10 billion Australians spend on food every December, more than 35 per cent is thrown away, according to its website statistics.

This year, however, there were spikes in online recycling research by residents in inner-west local government areas, as residents looked for ways to recycle Christmas presents, batteries and food.

The Planet Ark website recorded a 25 per cent increase for searches on organics, while Canada Bay residents clocked a 117 per cent increase in searches for how to recycle milk, juice and custard cartons.

“Reducing food waste begins with planning your grocery list, and then recycling whatever scraps are left over,” said Rebecca Gilling, spokeswoman for Planet Ark.

Each year, OzHarvest picks up truckloads of unused food and redistributes it all in Christmas bags and hampers to Sydney’s 278 charities that assist the needy.
