Our most popular bags are made from non woven polypropylene (NWPP), a relatively environmentally friendly plastic such as is used to produce the popular supermarket green bags. We also supply bags made from the natural fibres, cotton & jute.
NWPP is relatively cheap yet it is durable, water resistant, strong, recyclable, and can be easily printed. It also degrades more readily in the environment than many other plastics.
No. They degrade into minute pieces of plastic but they are not biodegradable or compostable.
Natural jute is one of the most environmentally friendly fabrics for reusable bags but most commonly used materials have their advantages and disadvantages. NWPP is a product of the petrochemical industry and although it is not biodegradable or compostable it is not so environmentally hazardous as many other plastics since it does degrade into minute pieces of plastic. Although it is recyclable, in practice very few bags are actually recycled. Whereas cotton or calico is a natural fibre which is biodegradable and compostable the growth of cotton does use considerable resources. Organic cotton is much more preferable to conventional cotton.
See the Jute or Polypropylene page for more details about the advantages of natural jute bags.
